Description
Transform simple water and butter into airy choux dough. Air-fry these bites for a beautifully crisp exterior and soft center—all the traditional flavor, minus the excess oil.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup Water
- 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter (or coconut oil)
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1 large Egg
- 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar or Sugar Substitute (e.g., erythritol)
- 1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
- Nonstick Cooking Spray (Avocado or Olive Oil), as needed
Instructions
- Step 1: In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, and salt. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, remove the pan from the heat, quickly add the flour all at once, and stir vigorously until a dough ball forms and pulls away cleanly from the sides of the pan.
- Step 2: Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Beat the egg into the dough until fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth and glossy. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or use a Ziploc bag with a corner snipped off).
- Step 3: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Pipe 1-inch long bites of dough onto a small piece of parchment paper or directly into the air fryer basket, ensuring not to overcrowd the basket. Lightly coat the churro bites thoroughly with nonstick cooking spray.
- Step 4: Air fry the bites for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time, until they are puffed, golden brown, and crispy on the exterior. Work in batches as necessary.
- Step 5: While the churro bites are cooking, combine the granulated sugar/sweetener and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Immediately after removing the churro bites from the air fryer, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until they are fully coated, and serve warm.
Notes
- For best results, store cooled, uncoated churro bites in an airtight container at room temperature; coat them in the cinnamon mixture just before serving or reheating.
- To bring back the delicious crunch, quickly reheat previously coated bites in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Elevate your churro experience by serving the bites with a warm dark chocolate dipping sauce or a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk.
- Remember to let the dough cool for the specified 5 minutes before incorporating the egg, which prevents scrambling and ensures you achieve that essential smooth, glossy piping consistency.
